Open Centers in Human Design

In your Human Design chart, each of the nine centers is either defined (colored in) or open (white). Defined centers represent consistent, reliable energy that belongs to you. Open centers are where you take in, amplify, and reflect the energy of the people around you. Understanding your open centers is one of the most practical things you can learn from your chart.

Why Open Centers Matter

Open centers are not weaknesses. They're places of deep sensitivity and potential wisdom. But they're also where you're most vulnerable to conditioning, where you absorb other people's energy and mistake it for your own. The thoughts, emotions, drives, and pressures you feel in your open centers may not actually belong to you. Learning to recognize this is what Human Design calls "deconditioning."

The 9 Centers

Here is what each center tends to experience when it is open.

Head Center

Pressure to think about things that don't matter to you. Trying to answer everyone else's questions.

Ajna Center

Pressure to be certain. Trying to have fixed opinions when your strength is seeing multiple perspectives.

Throat Center

Pressure to talk, to get attention. Trying to be heard when your timing isn't right.

G Center

Pressure to have a fixed identity or direction. Feeling lost when you're actually designed to be adaptable.

Heart / Will Center

Pressure to prove yourself. Making promises to demonstrate your worth.

Sacral Center

Not knowing when enough is enough. Taking on more than your body can sustain.

Solar Plexus Center

Absorbing other people's emotions and amplifying them. Avoiding conflict to keep the peace.

Spleen Center

Holding on to things that aren't good for you. Fear of letting go.

Root Center

Pressure to rush and get things done. Feeling stressed by deadlines that aren't yours.

Going Deeper

This page covers the basics of what each open center tends to experience. But your specific chart, including which gates are active in your open centers, changes the picture significantly. Our Open Centers Guide goes deeper into how conditioning shows up in each center and how to start recognizing what's yours and what isn't.

If you're new to the system, start with what is Human Design. Your centers also determine your type, which the 5 Human Design types covers in full.
